IoT, how to power them correctly. Three aspects not to be overlooked!

With the increase of smart devices and Internet of Things (IoT) in the market, the need for low-voltage DC is increasingly growing. In particular, as the performance of end devices increases, so does the power required to power them.

For all those smart home devices that need to be directly connected to an electrical network, it is essential to have a stable and reliable power supply. Any malfunction would result in increased energy costs, unnecessary power wastage, or simply inconvenience in the system itself.

Here is a small guide on what to pay attention to when choosing the right power supply for IoT applications.

IoT refers to all those devices designed based on various common characteristics, such as distributed intelligence, multiple interconnected sensors, and decentralized controls. In practice, IoT comes into play when spaces, environments, and objects need to be made 'smart', incorporating sensors that can communicate with each other intelligently.

This applies to lighting systems that can be automatically adjusted with human presence, or machines that monitor their own health status, or smart home systems that automatically create routines for energy saving.

1. EFFICIENCY

The entire technology, of course, requires power: it must be highly efficient, with low standby power consumption and usable within networks with hundreds of intelligent sensors, at a low cost and compact size. Not all power supplies are designed to be installed in IoT systems. They must be efficient both at low load and full load, capable of handling fast transients and dynamic current flows, and of course, always ensuring stability to the entire network.

Like many other similar devices, power supplies for IoT also need to have a compact case at affordable prices.

2. SAFETY

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) can affect circuits through electromagnetic inductions, electrostatic coupling, or conduction, drastically reducing the performance of the entire network. In this case, it is necessary to opt for power devices certified according to CISPR32/EN55032 Class B.
